A Program to Create a Wavefront (OBJ) Terrain from a Height Map


This is a relatively simple program that reads a grey scale height map image and converts it to a texture mapped Wavefront Object (OBJ) terrain model. The height map may be of real geology, or invented.

The terrain created from the image shown in the program height map preview was then imported into the Modelling Studio, and produced the terrain below:

I wrote this program so I could create terrains for the DAZ Studio figure animation package. The render below came from DAZ Studio, with the terrain being created from a real life height map from the area South of the settlement of 'Chicken' in Alaska, and the texture mapped terrain was imported into DAZ Studio. As it happens, the cloud sheets were generated in the same way from photographs of clouds I took in my garden.

The program is a 32 bit Windows program, and is known to run on Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit versions) and Win 10 (64 bit). It may run under WINE on Linux. It should work in any 32 bit windows operating system. The program is a single file .exe file and executes in any directory you extract the file to. It writes no files other than the .obj file.
